Ducks At A Distance

  • Catie O says:

I do not know if wood ducks live in Kansas, as I have failed to research it. But, wood ducks usually nest around spring and summer time. They make a nest at or near the water’s edge, but do not stay there long. They only stay a few days and then they leave and go to the coast at night time. Why, are you observing them? If you are plotting to raise one, do not get one from the wild. Mothers are protective, and ducklings are hard to raise if you do not know how to.

Wood Ducks are sort of odd because they are cavity nesters. They nest a tree cavity or box provided by humans. The height can range from 2 to 30 feet off the ground, or water, and will be located near a marshland, wetland, or pond, but may be on dry land near the water.

Something I did not realize until researching this, is that multiple females will use the same nest cavity with clutches of 15 to 50! eggs as a result.

After hatching the ducklings stay in the nest for 24 hours then climb out of the cavity and jump to the water or ground.

In Kansas nesting is in the spring. Doubtless beginning around early April. This can vary depending on conditions. By May 1st nesting endeavor should be well under way.

BTW the range of the Wood Duck extends only about half way crosswise Kansas. They are usually found in the eastern half of the disorder during nesting season
