Two AOU pelagic trip aboard Grande on Friday and Saturday, February 12 & 13, 2010 visited the Nine Mile Bank and the Coronados Islands. Highlights included Red-Billed Tropicbird, Long-tailed Duck, lots of Brown Boobies and oystercatchers, 3 species of Shearwater, 4 species of alcid, 3 species of loons, 3 species of cormorant, 2 species of jaeger, 2 species of whales, 4 species of dolphin, 2 species of seal and a nice variety of rocky shorebirds.

Alaska Sea Life Center in Seward, Alaska – 2010 May 01 A week later… Does Bering the long-tailed duck remember me? Was the attraction the green coat? (Another woman in the same color proves that’s not the case.) Bering was reunited with Tussock, his more colorful brother, during this week. It seems there was a bit of sibling rivalry over my attention. You may notice a circle dance for who is closest and I did try to give Bering the advantage. Bering taught his brother to play hide-n-seek with the hooman loon. The rhinoceros Auklet cannot be ignored. It follows… just more quietly! And the Tufted Puffins, Horned Puffins, King Eiders, and other seabirds make grand appearances and noises. The background noise is rock scrubbing and hoses running while two staffers clean the aviary. Thanks to B for documenting this reunion.

The San Diego Bird Festival seabirding and whale pelagic trips aboard the 85-foot live-aboard Grande were all great successes. We saw Gray Whales, Fin Whales, Humpback Whales and FOUR San Diego County Black-footed Albatrosses – all less than 14 miles from the mainland, one just 6 miles south of Point Loma and 5 miles west of Imperial Beach. How do you top that? Throw in a Brown Booby only 2.5 miles off Point Loma and a Laysan Albatross 5 miles south of the Mexican border, 4.5 miles north of North Coronados Island, 11 miles off the coast of Tijuana and you have an incredible Bird Festival. All three trips had great views of Bonaparte’s Gulls, Parasitic and Pomarine Jaegers, Xantus’s Murrelets, Cassin’s and Rhinoceros Auklets, three species of loons and three species of cormorant. The wintering Long-tailed Duck at Ballast Point was missing in action Thursday but seen on the way out and on the way back in on both Saturday and Sunday. A high count of 30 Brown Boobies were seen on Saturday’s trip.

Brief selection of video highlights from my birding trip around Speyside, Falls of Clyde SWT, Ruddon’s point in Fife and Caerlaverock WWT. Including Capercaillie, Black Grouse, Ptarmigan, Peregrine Falcon eating Starling, Long-tailed Duck, Eider, Barnacle Geese and ‘hooded’ crow with carrion genes in it. It also features panoramas of a snow covered Cairngorm corrie, Caerlaverock from a tower hide, the Findhorn Valley (Strathdearn) and the Farr road. For viewing enjoyment I suggest watching on mute and syncing with your favourite Radiohead song…
