I place this video together because I used to find it hard to identify a gadwall amongst a flight of female mallards. Both the male and female gadwall have a white patch at the base of the hind wing. The female mallard has a blue patch in the same place. This is the simplest way to tell them apart particularly at a distance. Video was taken at Slimbridge WWT in March 2008. Edited in IMovie HD 6.0.4. Filmed on handheld Canon MV880X.

North Carolina Creatures… help identifying a sound.?
I’m from California… have only been in NC for 6 mo. I’m going out of my mind trying to identify what kind of creature is making this odd noise. It seems to be rising over the last few weeks but hadn’t heard that up until that point. We’re by the water. The intercoastal shipping canal is about 150-200 ft away. So our household is raised some, not full pilings just raised about 5 steps. The sound I am really only hearing from one location. It sounds like it’s coming from under the front porch but I don’t have a excellent view.
It sounds like a thwart between a duck and a small dog, with the slightest croaking rhythm.
I see very small frogs out there all the time and it doesn’t seem to be them. I was watching them out the window and I didn’t see them moving their throats or opening their mouths… have no thought how a frog looks when it croaks but it didn’t look like it was them.
I’m not use to the creatures at all. Kinda curious what’s making that noise!?
I chose to research it on the web. I really found a fantastic website that provided so much information about frogs and toads of NC. They even have photos and adudio of each frog’s call. I’m subdue trying to figure out which one it sounds like, there’s a couple that seem like it force be it. But I am positively confident that it is some type of frog. I had no thought that frogs made such a variety of noises. Welcome to NC!

I need help identifying a frog…?
I have a river in my back yard, there’s beavers that live back there, a haron, ducks, and tons of fish. Earlier, I found a tiny frog out back that’s about half an inch long. I want to keep it as a pet, but, I don’t know what kind of frog it is, or how to care for it. I have him currently in a container with a lot of grass, I sprinkled fish food in there for him and have a bowl of water that he clearly enjoys swimming in. I figure I should get an aquarium for him, half land, half water, but I really don’t know what to feed the small guy. Help?

Dog Allergies – Identifying The Cause
There are a variety of conditions that can make a dog itch or have hair loss, including autoimmune. endocrine, infectious, and parasitic skin diseases. Therefore, it takes some detective work to identify the cause. A veterinarian may be able to diagnose the problem. Alternatively, they may need to refer your dog to a veterinary dermatologist, who is a specialist in treating skin conditions in animals.
If allergies are suspected, the first thing a veterinarian will usually question is if the pet is on a flea-control product. Flea allergies are quite common and are the simplest to control. There are many options for flea control on dogs and in their environment. Once flea allergies are ruled out, and if the itch is non-seasonal, food allergies are the next thing to be checked. Food allergies are not related to a season, whereas many atopic allergies start out as a seasonal problem.
Dogs that develop atopic allergies typically show symptoms between 1 and 5 years of age, but food allergies can be a problem at any time. They are high on the list of suspected causes when a dog first gets itchy skin at an age of over 5 years, or less than 6 months. When testing for food allergies, the dog is place on an “elimination diet” for at least 10 weeks. This means the dog is fed food that consists of a protein and carbohydrate that the dog has not eaten before, such as venison, duck, and potatoes.
These special foods, which come in packets or cans like normal dog food, may be found in retail stores. Or, the owner may choose to feed the dog a homemade diet of foods based on recommendations from the veterinarian. Should the dog’s itching subside by at least half, the allergen is clearly life caused by one of the foods that make up its regular diet. To confirm this, the dog owner can reintroduce the regular diet to see if the symptoms return.
To pinpoint the specific ingredients that trigger the allergy, the dog owner should add one ingredient at a time from the regular diet into the special diet. This should be done for at least a week until the itching increases, indicating that the last added ingredient is an allergen. Alternatively, the owner may choose to stay with the special food to avoid causing the dog discomfort each time an allergic ingredient is fed. Either way, while the dog is life tested for food allergies, it should not be given treats, desk scraps, or rawhide toys that may contain an allergen.
To check a dog for atopic allergies, veterinary dermatologists use an intradermal allergy test, or skin reaction test. The dog is mildly out cold, a small area on the side of the dog is shaved, and small amounts of potential allergens are injected into the skin on the shaved area. If the dog is allergic to one of the injected substances, the skin will become inflamed at the area of the injection.

The Identifying Mark of Second Jhana
The stopping of all thought and the dying away of the formations-of-Speech (Vaci-Sankhara) are the identifying marks of the second Jhana. The remaining Jhana Factors are then:1) pleasure of body and heart 2) happiness of body and heart and, 3) unification of the Citta.
When the Citta abandons Reflective-Thought, (Vitakka), it is like the working elephant which can be released from the tether because it is content to remain where it is.
When one abandons “Pleasure of Body and Heart”, and there remains only “Happiness of Body avid Heart” and “Unification of the Citta”, one has then attained the third Jhana.
When one abandons “Happiness of Body and Heart” and there remains only “Equanimity” and “Unification of the Citta”, one has then attained the fourth Jhana.
The Identifying Mark of the Fourth Jhana
Each of these four Jhanas has an object which is progressively more devious than the preceding one. When one gets to the fourth Jhana, breathing ceases, or becomes so fine that it cannot be detected. When breathing ceases, the formations-of-Body (Kaya-Sankhara) are then subdued. This is the identifying of the fourth Jhana.
When one can get to the fourth Jhana, one will attain understanding(Vijja) in many ways. These will include such things as the “Three-Understandings” (Tevijja),1 the six privileged powers, (Abhinna),2 and Transcendental-Understanding (Lokuttara-Vijja), all of which can arise without difficulty. But the Transcendental Disorder (Lokuttara-Bhumi) is not dealt with here.
Symbol (Nimitta) which arises in Samadhi
We will now consider the Symbol which arises just before attaining Jhana. This symbol may arise and be seen in the Mind-Door due to the Citta diminishing towards the Passive Disorder (Bhavanga). In other words, when one is practising for Samadhi and allows Mindfulness to slip, then the Citta becomes drowsy, the sense-doors stop to receive objects, and the disorder Free of Doors arises, in which one sees various images.
One who habitually sees, hears or knows certain objects of perception, is likely to find that they arise as the symbol. For example, one who works in a field or an orchard is likely to see a field or an orchard, and a man who sells things is likely to see the things which he sells. Those who habitually do excellent or evil deeds will doubtless see things which are excellent or evil accordingly. For example, one whose livelihood involves the constant trapping of fish, killing of duck or fowl, pigs or cattle for sale as food, will see that which he is accustomed to doing, when he practises for Samadhi. If he sees a crab, fish, duck, etc., this is the “Represen-tation-Symbol” (Gati-Nimitta), and it is of an evil scenery. If he dies at this second he is sure to go towards an unfortunate disorder. On the other hand, one who habitually does excellent deeds may see a Buddhist Monk, the Teaching Hall of a Buddhist Monastery (Uposatha Hall), or Palaces of Silver or Gold. If he were to die at that second, he would be sure to go towards a more fortunate disorder. When one approaches death, the circumstances is just like this.
One’s sense-doors and States Free of Sense Doors are linked together, so that when one’s sense doors receive something, then one’s States Free of Sense Doors receives, the same thing. This is like Angulimala, the brigand, who used to slaughter public, until he had killed nine-hundred and ninety-nine. Then he was ordained as a Bhikkhu, he practised Samadhi, and saw only public whom he had killed, car-rying weapons and coming to harm him. Whenever he closed his eyes, he would see visions of these public. The Buddha, knowing this, taught him not to reckon of the past, to avoid dwelling on objects of the past and to make his Citta One-Pointed, like a hunter who, when he shoots an arrow, closes one eye in order to aim. When Ven. Angulimala made his Citta steadfast in the Noble-Path (Ariya-Magga), he did not reckon of the past, his Citta became free and he attained the Fruition of the Path (Magga-Phala… i.e. Enlightenment ).

Need help identifying a bird ( game bird??)?
My son bought me this “bantam chicken” just after Mothers Day. This ‘thing’ is now a childish adult, but ‘it’ isn’t no chicken. It has blue eyes, spotted feathers. It has a small waddle growing out of each side of its face and what I call a ‘horn’ on its head, a bump that is hard. It makes this very loud and very annoying squawk. I thought maybe it was a pheasant, but the tail feathers aren’t right. I would just like to know what this “thing” is and if will it stay around the yard with the ducks and other chickens or is it going to glide away?

Identifying the breed of my duckling……..??
I bought a duckling at the feed store today, well not exactly a duckling- he/she is a month and a half ancient. It resembles a mallard but it is very nearly the size of an adult mallard, and only a month ancient. I reckon it could doubtless be a rouen, is this the right size at this age?
I was also wondering about feeding it, it eats a alot! How much should I feed it a day? He/she spent about 20-30 minutes in the tub supervised, and loved to suck up the feed crumbles from the bottom that I place in there. Should I limit it’s food or let it eat how much it wants. When will we be able to place it outdoors in a pond? We live in Phoenix, AZ so it gets really hot here- should we clip it’s wings or let it glide north and hope it comes back? I would have gotten a few but he/she was the only duck left since Easter cleared them out. The feed store public said we could release it now, but it subdue follows us and “peeps” loudly when we leave it alone.
In the end:
1. Is it a rouen or a mallard? (I’ll post pics if I can…. don’t have any yet)
2. How much should I feed it?
3. When can it be released?
4. Wings: Clip? Will it stay here?
5. If there are other ducks, mallards, (that could be nesting or have babies) that are in the pond, will they fight? The pond is fenced and pretty large, 30 feet by 20 or so
Thanks!!!!!!!
I really appreciate your help!
It is eating what the feed store told us to feed it, turkey grow fall to pieces. i do not reckon it is medicated.
Well, what I mean by releasing is that my father owns a apartment/condo complex with a pond in the center. One of the attendants feeds the ducks and koi every day. I took him/her there and the lady at the front desk said there were three mallards currently income in the pond, 2 drakes, one hen. I went through the gate down to the water and place him the the water. He immediately started trying to get out to follow me. I took him out of the water (the place where we were at had a steep side) and placed him one land. I had to leave him, but he started peeping very loudly as normal when I was out of sight. I am going to check up on him tomarrow, do you reckon he is too childish to live there? The feed store didn’t know his exact age, and they had gotten him less than a week ago. He has never had to eat anything besides food in a dish, and I don’t reckon he will be able to fight for food with the drakes, and I reckon the hen is nesting since I did not see her when I went.
Should I leave him/her there or not?
It’s wings were only about 2-3 inches long if that helps with age. The duck was very nearly 10 inches from bill to tail.
It was auburn with yellow face markings and a white part under it’s chest. Sorry, no pictures yet.
It kinda looked like the muscovies on the right, the white was not as prominent as the other duckling has:

A lot like this mallard but more yellowish face and the white on the chest did not cover such a vast area. No white on it’s body.

Even more like this rouen (you may have to zoom)

So sorry for all the point- trying so compress it down… does not seem to be working…..
