Ducks At A Distance

Who can help identify this duck?

It appears to be a male duck (judging by the size). He’s usually alone, so I have no other ducks to compare him to. He has markings that remind me of a mallard, but different. His head is dark auburn (not green) and he does have the lighter band on his throat. His body is a very set alight tan color. He’s larger than a mallard also. I’ve never seen one like him. I live in South Florida and he’s in the pond by my household.

Can anyone help me identify this strange bird?

I was at the duck pond with my mother’s playgroup class, and we saw a bird we couldn’t identify. It is a large iridescent black waterfowl with black webbed feet, a black beak, and a red ridge on its head. It looked like a run of red balls arranged in a sort of crown.

I thought it was a cormorant at first, but I can’t seem to find it online. Has anyone ever seen this extraordinary bird before, and if so, what is it called?
