Brant Goose ? The Goose With Three Names

Canada’s North is dark, cold and hostile.  Very few public live there.  There are few roads, swarms of mosquitoes and normal terrible weather so it’ s safe to say the climate is inhospitable.  Expect to be surprised by what does live there.

For one, the Brant Goose (branta bernida) breeds here. (It is commonly called by all three of the names in the title, though Brant Goose was the original and the most widely usual name). Only two snow-free months of the year are suitable for this, and within this time, it lays and hatches eggs, raises the childish and takes off to chill either further south or to glide the 8000 miles crosswise the Atlantic to places like Jersey’s coast. That’s some journey and it wants to be in excellent shape to complete it.

It’s main breeding areas are the decrease Arctic regions of the Yukon-Kushokwim Delta, Mackenzie Delta, Victoria Island and Melville, Prince Patric and Eglington Islands.  Melville islands flight are thought to be distinctive.  If they are then their facts are quite small, around 6000.

It has to sustain itself for this flight and it is really only partial to certain types of food.  These are in particular eel-grass and to a lesser extent, algae and herring eggs.  This turns out to be one of the reasons for its decline.  It really does need to change its palate!  Eel-grass is not found everywhere.  It is a blooming underwater grass in shallow sub-tidal areas, which spreads by roots or rhiazomes, and it is a small factory for a variety of feasters.

Brant Geese and Eel-grass are disheveled.  Industrialization kills off eel-grass so it’s vital to get the balance right between human progress and the natural environment.

The Brant Goose resembles the smaller, shorter-necked forms of the Canada Goose but it is much darker without white cheeks.  It breeds farther north than any other known goose.  The eggs and downy childish are preyed upon by crows, gulls, mink and a variety of other small animals including bullfrogs, pike and carp.  But it is man who preys upon the adult goose.

Geese are tasty to eat.  They provide goose stout, considered by some to be one of the highest class fats of all.  Their belly feathers provide down for duvets and pillows and then there is foie gras, a goose pate made from force feeding the geese.  Goose confit is also a food speciality, having a strong following in France.  Originally it was a mode used to preserve the meat when no refrigerators existed.  The leg meat is seasoned and herbs are added.  It is then deep fried slowly in its own rendered stout.  When cooking is complete the dish cools down and the stout solidifies around the leg thereby preserving it.  There is evidence that geese have long been domesticated though it is not likely that the Brant Goose, because of it’s Arctic breeding environment, ever fell into this category.

Additionally, hunting geese was a well loved water sport.  Using decoys and mimicking their honking noise attracted geese flying in the area to investigate closer, often to the detriment of one or other of the flight.  Even digging pits, camouflaging them and setting out fifteen or sixteen decoys on the ground above the pit, making everything look as real as possible, proved a successful way to lure them in, ready for the kill.  There is a school of thought that the more decoys you have, the more likely you are to attract geese to settle among the decoys.

It is only officially authorized to hunt Brant geese today if you have a licence by DEFRA which in turn is only awarded when it can be proved that the goose is damaging crops.  They will remain a protected species until their facts return to sustainable levels.

Siberian Goose Down Comforter

White Siberian goose down is the most highly prized filling for goose comforters. But now the Down Association of Canada says that Siberian goose down is really a trade name. The Down Association of Canada plus other bedding experts argue that the actual Siberian goose doesn’t look or con like a duck, er, goose down comforter. The Siberian Goose is a protected species that, according to a Highlights Magazine picture, flaunts red and black plumage–hardly the pristine white color for a white goose down comforter.

Goose down used in duvets and comforters and name brand comforters is collected from geese raised all around the world. Among the finest is Hutterite goose down from Alberta, Canada. Siberia produces another brilliant, very dense variety of goose down. Poor to high quality down is collected in Asia. Luxury down comforters boasting high quality goose down can be found at a discount online.

If you order a Siberian goose comforter, see if it has a zipper and unzip it to look at the down. Or do the “squeeze” test to verify that the down is high quality. Perhaps you’re better off avoiding the risk of fake products and choosing Hungarian or Canadian goose comforters. Marketing hype is everywhere–look at the way talentless William Hung achieved dubious fame after a spectacular failure and Simon Cowell excoriation on “American Idol.” But unlike William Hung, Siberian white goose down comforters are everywhere and in demand.

The Down Association of Canada published an anonymous proclamation from “a major supplier of ‘Siberian Down‘” in which the supplier admitted the trade name is spurious. “Siberian Down” may come from a variety of countries. The Down Association of Canada’s conclusion: No one can verify actual Siberian Down, so the term is an empty marketing mark any seller of white goose down comforters can use.

This means that the shot has to hit that respective zone for it to be called a success, otherwise the bird stands a excellent chance of escaping. For some, this is the right beauty of goose hunts, the lack of predictability at all times, never knowing whether the bird will fall to the ground or not, keeping your fingers crossed every time you pull the trigger. It is a known fact that, in all hunting varieties, luck is an ally whose support can prove intense and no hunter is a excellent hunter without it by his side. Decoys are essential components of the calling process, and experts advise you to always bring with you a variety of decoys differentiating by color, shape and size, as to suit every occasion you force meet. Along the way you will be able to tell if certain flocks of geese can be called or not, if and how they will respond to your calling, whether or not a certain spot is fit for calling, etc.
