When duck and goose hunting in order to be successful and to be in a position whereby one can have superior chances of shooting, decoys are a very vital tool for the waterfowler. But where do you start?

In this brief thought of Getting Started with Decoy Placement we will cover some vital facets of decoys and the placement of duck and goose decoys. The thought of carrying a slightly heavier decoy bag, weighed in comparison to the realism in which a heavier decoy rides on the water, is not even comparable. Reason life, your more weightier decoys are going to ride decrease in the water, thereby displacing water more like that of a “real” duck and have better bouyancy for itself than it’s cheaper, lighter counterparts. Now it is helpful to have birds of various head and body positions to place in your apply. One way to have more decoys with varying head and body positioning without costs a mini fortune, is to simply buy excellent quality, realistic looking decoys for your interior landing zone of your apply and somewhat lesser quality decoys to place on the out-skirts of your apply.

Say two dozen quality decoys in the landing zone of your apply where ducks are more apt to land. They will be paying more attention to these decoys in the center of your landing zone simply because that is where they are looking to land. So it only makes sense to add to that visual acuity by introduction quality, realistic decoys with non-glaring paint jobs in this area.

Now you can buy a couple dozen of cheaper decoys, if you will, to place on the out-skirts of your apply and use various species and altering body positions to really convey the thought of “Hey it’s cool, land here” to the ducks on the waters you are hunting. The waterfowler can get away with introduction less meticulous ducks in these outside areas of the landing zone because duck’s vision will not be fixed on these birds as it would on the central area of its landing zone.

Try different species of differing body positions from various manufacturers, it will not hurt to experiment a small in this area as long as you don’t compromise too much in the area of the landing zone on the realism of the decoys for this area.

Remember to position your landing zone to make sort of a ‘pocket’ that the birds will have to glide into from your downwind side. This places the birds coming straight in to your decoys, into the wind to land. Also, they prefer not to glide over decoys in order to land, so remember to always leave this open pocket on the downwind side of the decoy placement. Place your blind or hunting boat (camouflaged thoroughly) of course, on the upwind side of this pocket.  Orient your boat to produce safe shooting zones for you and your partner(s) thus each hunter can focus on shooting straight out in front of him and not having to worry about swinging his gun barrel into his buddy’s shooting zone.

In summary, place quality, realistic decoys, possessing attention to point, in the landing zone of your decoy apply and you could place somewhat of lesser meticulous decoys in the out-lying edges of your apply because the incoming birds visual focus is always towards their landing zones. The outside ‘filler’ decoys make the overall look of a larger apply.
