Using Wild Duck Decoys

Every respectable wild duck hunter should have the best duck decoys available on the market. The reason for this is because the chance of catching more ducks using these decoys greatly improves if they are used properly. The main purpose of these decoys is to make a more natural looking environment which will trick the ducks to glide overhead, thinking that it is a very safe place to land, which obviously it isn’t.

In the early days of wild duck hunting, tamed ducks were used in order to attract other wild ducks towards an area with water. The pond was manufactured using a wickerwork tunnel that was very long and cone-shaped. Barriers were wisely built to hide a so-called “decoy man” from the birds which were near the pond side of the tunnel, while he was life revealed to the birds that were in the near vicinity of the trap end of the tunnel. The decoy man employed the use of a highly trained dog as well as grain in order to attract the birds towards the tunnel. The second they have entered the tunnel, the birds slowly went away from the decoy man towards the dog. Afterwards, the birds are driven into a small-sized trap set up at the end of the tunnel where they were killed.

In the present, wild duck decoys are really toy decoys that are custom made at home or bought from the local hunting store. There are many widely known wild decoy manufactures: Taylor Decoys, Columbia River, E. Allen and others as well. Of course, hunters have the likelihood to buy these decoys not only from local shops but also from the Internet; some of the websites have very excellent prices, even better than the ones in the local shop.

In order to give your decoy apply a more natural look, it is highly advisable to use a wide variety of wild duck decoys, such as: Mallards, Canada geese, Drakes, Gadball, Ringnecks and Pintails. Placement of the decoys is critical that is why veteran hunters recommend introduction them so that you make a natural and alluring environment so that the wild ducks won’t find anything suspicious. Decoys should be placed facing different directions ( to improve authenticity ) so that it won’t matter from where the ducks will come, you will have fantastic chances nevertheless.

Choosing the most optimal wild duck hunting decoys shouldn’t be a very hard thing to do, you just have to take few things into consideration: motion- the best decoys are those that use bobbing heads and flapping wings as these look more realistic and will attract more ducks; control- decoys should simply be turned on and then left alone to do their job; another wise choice would be purchasing duck decoys that are controlled using a wireless diffident control; power- power is one of the most vital aspects you have to take into consideration before purchasing a duck decoy that is why hunters should always check to see how long will the battery last because a decoy with a low-life battery won’t be efficient because you would have to change the batteries very often which will scare the ducks away.

All things considered, with a small bit of research and plotting every hunter will have improved chances of catching more of these birds with the use of duck decoys that are placed optimal so that they can make a natural look that will fool these birds.

Getting Started With Decoy Placement

When duck and goose hunting in order to be successful and to be in a position whereby one can have superior chances of shooting, decoys are a very vital tool for the waterfowler. But where do you start?

In this brief thought of Getting Started with Decoy Placement we will cover some vital facets of decoys and the placement of duck and goose decoys. These methods and means are implemented every year by successful waterfowl hunters crosswise the country that learned this setup feature years ago and now perform it merely by second scenery. Doubtless, if the truth be known, these successful hunters would tell you that the methods they use are typically taken for granted because once they are learned they’re just a foundational construction block.

It is these foundational concepts that all other decoy spreads and placements are built upon.

First and foremost, before we briefly describe this thought, is that one wants to buy some decoys that have realistic dimensions and paint patterns that are comparable to live ducks. Whether it be ducks or geese that you are hunting, you need to buy decoys that have excellent paint patterns using a flat, non reflective, type paint. Nothing will scare or spook a potential bagged bird more than decoys painted with a highly reflective type paint, thus spooking birds before you would ever see them within gun range.

So buy decoys that possess low luster, flat type paints on them. Flambeau has recently came out with it’s latest paint technology with UVision paints, which will be covered in superior point in prospect messages, that supposedly absorb all set alight waves thus preventing any glare or flash. Ducks are physiologically composed to see into the ultraviolent set alight realm, another topic altogther.

Look for decoys that are realistic in their stature and anatomical features. Fulfilling the ancient clich’e “If it looks like a duck, floats like a duck then it doubtless is a duck.” You want decoys that look ducky; simply place that look ‘real’. When ducks or geese see your decoys they should develop confidence because they are getting ready to land amongst other brethren of the flight. They should look that real. So export quality is a must when it comes to owning duck and goose decoys.

Not only are quality, realistic looking duck decoys realistic but they typically possess a small more toughness and resiliency to withstand years of usage whereas cheaper decoys would not.

Now some of the heavier decoys that are on the market are not neccessarily a terrible thing. When you are looking to buy decoys and notice that some are heavier than others per dozen don’t allow this to deter you from export such. The thought of carrying a slightly heavier decoy bag, weighed in comparison to the realism in which a heavier decoy rides on the water, is not even comparable. Reason life, your more weightier decoys are going to ride decrease in the water, thereby displacing water more like that of a “real” duck and have better bouyancy for itself than it’s cheaper, lighter counterparts. Overall, it is going to be more realistic to the ducks thus proven itself in time to be more effective in drawing ducks into gun range consistently.

Now it is helpful to have birds of various head and body positions to place in your apply. One way to have more decoys with varying head and body positioning without costs a mini fortune, is to simply buy excellent quality, realistic looking decoys for your interior landing zone of your apply and somewhat lesser quality decoys to place on the out-skirts of your apply.

Say two dozen quality decoys in the landing zone of your apply where ducks are more apt to land. They will be paying more attention to these decoys in the center of your landing zone simply because that is where they are looking to land. So it only makes sense to add to that visual acuity by introduction quality, realistic decoys with non-glaring paint jobs in this area.

Now you can buy a couple dozen of cheaper decoys, if you will, to place on the out-skirts of your apply and use various species and altering body positions to really convey the thought of “Hey it’s cool, land here” to the ducks on the waters you are hunting. The waterfowler can get away with introduction less meticulous ducks in these outside areas of the landing zone because duck’s vision will not be fixed on these birds as it would on the central area of its landing zone.

Try different species of differing body positions from various manufacturers, it will not hurt to experiment a small in this area as long as you don’t compromise too much in the area of the landing zone on the realism of the decoys for this area.

Remember to position your landing zone to make sort of a ‘pocket’ that the birds will have to glide into from your downwind side. This places the birds coming straight in to your decoys, into the wind to land. Also, they prefer not to glide over decoys in order to land, so remember to always leave this open pocket on the downwind side of the decoy placement. Place your blind or hunting boat (camouflaged thoroughly) of course, on the upwind side of this pocket.  Orient your boat to produce safe shooting zones for you and your partner(s) thus each hunter can focus on shooting straight out in front of him and not having to worry about swinging his gun barrel into his buddy’s shooting zone.

In summary, place quality, realistic decoys, possessing attention to point, in the landing zone of your decoy apply and you could place somewhat of lesser meticulous decoys in the out-lying edges of your apply because the incoming birds visual focus is always towards their landing zones. The outside ‘filler’ decoys make the overall look of a larger apply.

Hope this may help some of you all which force be new to this wonderful sport we call waterfowling.

Duck hunting with a spinning wing motion decoy

How to set up & use spinning wing decoys

Duck hunting spinning wing decoys can be one of the most effective decoying tools a  duck hunter can use.  The migrating, the younger and the early season ducks are drawn to the flash of a spinning wing decoy, as if they are on a string and you are pulling them in. There has been much controversy over the use of this decoy by DFG, hunters, activists, governmental agencies, etc. as to the use life an unfair benefit and that more birds will be taken during the hunting season. As a duck hunter that has been using and making spinning wing decoys to attract ducks since their inception, I have noticed that if anything more ducks are taken home by duck hunters than ducks killed with the use of a spinning wing decoy. What I mean by this is, since the spinning wing decoy is so effective especially with hunters who don’t know how to set decoys or call, that the birds come in closer for clean shots. Whereas before these types of hunters, which are the majority of hunters, take longer shots and cripple more birds than they kill clean. The cripples, which eventually die would usually be more than a limit. If anything the evolution of the spinning wing decoy has become a conservation tool and has brought back enthusiasm and excitement into duck hunting for hunters.

At http://www.herbanhunter.com we have developed duck hunting decoys with and without motors to fit any hunting circumstances. We have videos that show exactly how the spinner works out in the field.

The flash of the spinning wing simulates landing ducks and can pull in ducks from fantastic distances.  Point the wings of your spinning wing decoy upwind as this will be the direction ducks will come into your apply.  The more flash that is made, by using multiple spinning wing decoys the farther away ducks can see your apply.

Spinning wing decoys are most effective during the huge migration when the northern plains have frozen over and the ducks push south for warmer weather. They are also effective during the early season. During these times you want to place your spinning wing decoy in the exact spot you want the birds to land.  The birds will come in feet down and try to land on your spinner.  On non-migration days or late season heavily hunted birds, you want to place the spinning decoy up or down wind 20 to 30 yards outside your decoys or off to the side. Veteran birds tend not to land where the spinner is located. The spinners will attract them, give them a hole in your decoys to land.

On overcast days the effectiveness of the spinning wings goes down when there is small sunlight hitting the wings.  A tip for cloudy overcast days is to place your spinner in weed cover or under trees as the motion out in the open without sun will scare incoming ducks more than it will attract them.

Ducks have seen these spinning wing decoys from Canada all the way down to your hunting spot and the farther south you are, the harder time you will have trying to attract them.  On migration days when the sky is full of ducks, the spinning wing decoy is unbelievable, the ducks will drop out of the sky.

If you also do goose hunting while duck hunting you will find that the spinning wing will flare the geese off your apply. Things that can be done so the geese will not flare are diffident control spinners, but every time I see geese coming I can never get to my diffident in time. At http://www.herbanhunter.com we have developed a pull string spinning wing decoy that allows you to control the motion when ducks are overhead and no motion when geese are approaching. This also works well on late season birds as the flash is not constant like they have seen in every other apply. There are no motors, 100% manual operation which make them officially authorized in some states that have banned motorized decoys.

If you want more feet down in your face duck hunting, where you drop your ducks dead in the decoys, then you have to experience the use of a spinning wing decoy.

Using Duck Decoys

Duck hunting is not complete without the use of duck decoys. The purpose of them is to make a more natural looking hunting environment. In turn, this tricks any ducks flying overhead into thinking it is a safe place to land.

Earlier, tamed ducks were used to attract wild ducks towards a patch of water. The pond was constructed with a wickerwork tunnel that was long and cone shaped. Barriers were cleverly built to hide a “decoy man” from the birds which were in vicinity to the pond side of the tunnel, while he was life revealed to the birds that were closer to the trap end of the tunnel. The decoy man employed the use of a trained dog as well as grain to attract the birds towards the tunnel. Once they entered the tunnel, the birds went away from the decoy man towards the dog. Then the birds are driven into a small trap set up at the end of the tunnel where they were ultimately killed.

Nowadays, duck decoys are toys of ducks, custom made at home or bought at hunting stores. Different marks as Taylor Decoys, Columbia River, and E. Allen etc sell different duck decoys. Many website also offer the sale of a variety of duck decoys for reasonable rates.

It is always best to know what flight of birds are expected to choose on the type of duck decoys to use. But it is not advisable to use ducks of only one type. A variety of duck breeds like Mallards, Canada geese, Pintails, Drakes, Ringnecks, Gadball give the decoy apply a more natural look. Confidence decoys like those consisting of crane decoys, swan decoys, heron decoys or curlew decoys can also be used. These add variety to the apply and also build confidence. The decoys should also be apply to make it a very natural and alluring environment.  The location of the apply is also vital. Though some may be placed near the blinds, other should be placed in the open. The open should be  a large area that is visible from a flying duck’s point of view. There is no use of a excellent apply if it is not visible to the flight.
Also, water bodies with high waves do not attract the birds and hence cool waters are to be preferred while attracting ducks.

It is always better to have a excellent decoy apply facing different directions to add authenticity to the set up. This is because all duck decoys facing the same direction gives the appearance of birds that are alert and on the look – out for danger. The additional benefit of having decoys facing different directions is that, for birds flying above in any direction, the visibility of different patterns of colours below. Hence birds above get a pattern to colours of different regions of the birds and assume a natural flight below.

Thus having a fantastic decoy is just not enough to add more ducks to the hit-list. The handling and maintenance of duck decoys is also vital to make a ‘boom’ing success.

Stay our website to shop for duck decoys, and antique duck decoys.
