Captured AS SEEN MY WAY… The reflections of course always catches my eye.. the lighting kept changing.. the splendid natural colours and odd shadow on the water and the shimmering lighting as the goose swims by…

The Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) is a wild goose belonging to the genus Branta, which is native to Arctic and temperate regions of North America, having a black head and neck, white patches on the face, and a brownish-gray body. It is often called the Canadian Goose, but that name is not the ornithological standard, or the most common name. The black head and neck with white "chinstrap" characterize the Canada Goose from all other goose species, with the exception of the Barnacle Goose, but the latter has a black breast, and also grey, rather than brownish, body plumage. There are seven subspecies of this bird, of varying sizes and plumage details, but all are recognizable as Canada Geese. Some of the smaller races can be hard to characterize from the newly-separated Cackling Goose.
This species is 76–110 cm (30–43 in) long with a 127–180 cm (50–71 in) wingspan. The male usually weighs 3.2–6.5 kg, (7–14 pounds), and can be very aggressive in defending territory. The female looks virtually like peas in a pod but is slightly lighter at 2.5–5.5 kg (5.5–12 pounds), commonly 10% smaller than its male counterpart, and has a different honk. An exceptionally large male of the race B. c. maxima, the "giant Canada goose" (which rarely exceed 8 kg/18 lb), weighed 10.9 kg (24 pounds) and had a wingspan of 2.24 m (88 inches). This specimen is the largest wild goose ever recorded of any species. The life span in the wild is 10–24 years.
During the second year of their lives, Canada Geese find a mate. They are monogamous, and most couples stay together all of their lives If one is killed, the other may find a new mate. The female lays 3–8 eggs and both parents protect the nest while the eggs incubate, but the female spends more time at the nest than the male.
Adult geese are often seen leading their goslings in a line, usually with one parent at the front, and the other at the back. While protecting their goslings, parents often violently chase away nearby creatures, from small blackbirds to humans that approach, after warning them by giving off a hissing sound. Most of the species that prey on eggs will also take a gosling. Although parents are hostile to unfamiliar geese, they may form groups of a number of goslings and a few adults, called crèches. The offspring enter the fledging stage any time from 6 to 9 weeks of age. They do not leave their parents until after the spring migration, when they return to their birthplace. Once they reach later life, Canada Geese are rarely preyed on, but (beyond humans) can be taken by Coyotes, Red Foxes, Gray Wolves, Snowy Owls, Fantastic Horned Owls, Golden Eagles and, most often, Bald Eagles.

Greylag Goose (Anser anser)
goose species

The most commonly seen Goose in Sweden.

We have many goose species in Sweden that is breding or just passing by to their sommer lookations, but i only saw this specie at Hornborjasjön.
Their were probroly others but i dident spot them in the crowd of birds.

And it can be a bit hard to spot 1 diffrent specie in a group of Greylag Gooses without a excellent spotting scope/monocular.

The Bean Goose for exampel is quit simular to the Greylag Goose.

Brant Goose ? The Goose With Three Names

Canada’s North is dark, cold and hostile.  Very few public live there.  There are few roads, swarms of mosquitoes and normal terrible weather so it’ s safe to say the climate is inhospitable.  Expect to be surprised by what does live there.

For one, the Brant Goose (branta bernida) breeds here. (It is commonly called by all three of the names in the title, though Brant Goose was the original and the most widely usual name). Only two snow-free months of the year are suitable for this, and within this time, it lays and hatches eggs, raises the childish and takes off to chill either further south or to glide the 8000 miles crosswise the Atlantic to places like Jersey’s coast. That’s some journey and it wants to be in excellent shape to complete it.

It’s main breeding areas are the decrease Arctic regions of the Yukon-Kushokwim Delta, Mackenzie Delta, Victoria Island and Melville, Prince Patric and Eglington Islands.  Melville islands flight are thought to be distinctive.  If they are then their facts are quite small, around 6000.

It has to sustain itself for this flight and it is really only partial to certain types of food.  These are in particular eel-grass and to a lesser extent, algae and herring eggs.  This turns out to be one of the reasons for its decline.  It really does need to change its palate!  Eel-grass is not found everywhere.  It is a blooming underwater grass in shallow sub-tidal areas, which spreads by roots or rhiazomes, and it is a small factory for a variety of feasters.

Brant Geese and Eel-grass are disheveled.  Industrialization kills off eel-grass so it’s vital to get the balance right between human progress and the natural environment.

The Brant Goose resembles the smaller, shorter-necked forms of the Canada Goose but it is much darker without white cheeks.  It breeds farther north than any other known goose.  The eggs and downy childish are preyed upon by crows, gulls, mink and a variety of other small animals including bullfrogs, pike and carp.  But it is man who preys upon the adult goose.

Geese are tasty to eat.  They provide goose stout, considered by some to be one of the highest class fats of all.  Their belly feathers provide down for duvets and pillows and then there is foie gras, a goose pate made from force feeding the geese.  Goose confit is also a food speciality, having a strong following in France.  Originally it was a mode used to preserve the meat when no refrigerators existed.  The leg meat is seasoned and herbs are added.  It is then deep fried slowly in its own rendered stout.  When cooking is complete the dish cools down and the stout solidifies around the leg thereby preserving it.  There is evidence that geese have long been domesticated though it is not likely that the Brant Goose, because of it’s Arctic breeding environment, ever fell into this category.

Additionally, hunting geese was a well loved water sport.  Using decoys and mimicking their honking noise attracted geese flying in the area to investigate closer, often to the detriment of one or other of the flight.  Even digging pits, camouflaging them and setting out fifteen or sixteen decoys on the ground above the pit, making everything look as real as possible, proved a successful way to lure them in, ready for the kill.  There is a school of thought that the more decoys you have, the more likely you are to attract geese to settle among the decoys.

It is only officially authorized to hunt Brant geese today if you have a licence by DEFRA which in turn is only awarded when it can be proved that the goose is damaging crops.  They will remain a protected species until their facts return to sustainable levels.
