This garden statue is made in the USA of a copyrighted poured concrete mixture – meaning NO Resin. Each casting is hand finished at time of order, using a stain that permanently changes the exterior surface to one of the colors listed. As your statue ages, it will develop its own darkening – or patina. These are considered frost resistant and can be used in most any climate.

The Daily Telegraph described Northumberland as “a birder’s paradise” and Britain’s most northerly county with its dramatic scenery and rugged coastline is an amazing place to visit but even more of an experience if you’ve got a pair of bird watching binoculars to hand.

The sheer diversity of the Northumberland landscape makes for some of the best bird watching in the country. From mountains and moorlands and to the hills clad in heather and dotted with ship and from to ancient woodland to the deserted beaches and mudflats leading out into the distance, Northumberland with its diverse habitats attracts a huge variety of birds. The RSPB manages many sites and there are rare species and breeding colonies of international significance. It’s hardly surprising that thousands of people make their way there every year with the bird watching binoculars to enjoy the birdlife.

Coquet island, for instance, is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty managed by the RSPB and is accessible by boat from nearby Amble. It’s best visited between May and August. The cliffs at Needles Eye, north of Berwick-upon-Tweed, are home to large numbers of seabirds including Puffin who come to breed. Divers, Grebes and Seaduck can be found offshore during the winter months. Berwick is famous for its Mute Swans which can be seen by anyone who has a set of bird watching binoculars on the river at most times of the year.

Holy Island and Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve is famous for the wintering flock of pale-bellied brent geese plus wigeon and assorted other waterfowl that occupy the mudflats. The area is also renowned for large numbers of small birds, some of which are very rare. Large numbers of waterfowl also often seen during the winter at Budle Bay – just bring your binoculars, you’re in for a treat

While most visitors to Grand Cayman spend much of their time enjoying the underwater sights of the Caribbean or relaxing on the beach, there are plenty of exciting activities on land for the active or adventurous traveler. Grand Cayman and its sister islands – Cayman Brac and Little Cayman – have long been committed to preserving their diverse environments and natural Caribbean beauty. One of the best ways to experience the ecological results of Grand Cayman’s environmental programs is hiking through the island’s interior to observe the vibrant wildlife flying overhead. In addition to being both the permanent home to numerous species and the preferred breeding ground for many more, the Cayman Islands also boast a number of protected bird sanctuaries. When you visit Grand Cayman, try to spend some time watching the sky and enjoy one of the island’s simplest, but most rewarding pleasures.

One of the most exciting hikes in the Caribbean is Grand Cayman’s Mastic Trail, a two-mile path through one of the region’s last remaining dry subtropical forests. Besides offering tourists a glimpse at several plant and animal species unique to the Cayman Islands, this hike through the middle of Grand Cayman is also one of the island’s most relaxing activities. Elsewhere on the island, visitors can find paths that wind through palm trees and mangroves or hike along the coastline and enjoy the endless Caribbean scenery. When coupling hiking with a little bird watching, you can enjoy one of Grand Cayman’s favorite pastimes.

The trails of Grand Cayman can be enjoyed throughout the year for casual outdoor fun or as part of locally-guided nature and bird watching tours. During bird watching outings, you will have a chance to enjoy lush natural surroundings and ideal conditions while learning about some of the most fascinating winged creatures on the planet.

During the peak bird watching season, it is possible to see over 200 different species – some of them permanent residents and others just passing through the island.

If you choose hike through the forests of Grand Cayman’s interior – including the popular Mastic Trail – you will probably have a chance to spot some of the following island landbird species:

? Bananaquit
? Caribbean Elaenia
? Loggerhead Kingbird
? Red-Legged Thrush
? Thick-Billed Vireo
? Vitelline Warbler
? Zenaida Dove

Though the summer months mark the tourism off-season for Grand Cayman, several winged visitors make their way to the island during this time each year. Among the several species that flock to the Cayman Islands as part of annual breeding rituals, here are just a few of the most interesting guests:

? Antillean Nighthawk
? Black-Whiskered Vireo
? Gray Kingbird
? White-Tailed Tropicbird

Additionally, more than 70 different species of migrating wetland birds have been spotted in the Cayman Islands – including everything from ducks and egrets to flamingos and spoonbills. However, researchers and birdwatchers alike pay a little extra attention to the wetland birds that breed on Grand Cayman and her sister islands. Some of the wetland species that fall into this special category include:

? Black-Necked Stilt
? Green Heron
? Pied-billed Grebe
? Tri-colored Heron
? West Indian Whistling Duck
? Willet
? Yellow-Crowned Night-Heron

For years, birdwatchers have also flocked to Grand Cayman and its bird sanctuaries for a glimpse of protected species in a natural habitat. The small island of Grand Cayman has seven distinct bird sanctuaries – including such popular sites as the QE II Botanic Park and the Majestic Reserve – each supporting unique winged species and an incredible variety of plant and animal life. If you make a daytrip to one of the sister islands, you will have several opportunities to observe some truly remarkable species in their protected environments. For instance, the endangered Brac Parrot can be found on Cayman Brac’s extraordinary 180-acre parrot reserve, while Little Cayman’s Booby Pond is home to the largest colony of Red-Footed Boobies in the Western Hemisphere.

Though Grand Cayman is known for its gorgeous beaches and incredible diving opportunities, there is much more to see than meets the eye. By setting out on foot through Grand Cayman’s interior or visiting one of the island’s bird sanctuaries, you will be able to experience an exciting, but too often overlooked side of this special Caribbean destination.

Spain is an astonishingly rich nation when it comes to exhibiting wildlife. Spain is considered to have implausible variety of indigenous species because of its diverse climate and terrain within its precincts. This is a good enough reason that accounts for the variety of birds that can spotted in Spain. Spain is a suitable dwelling for about 20 different species of birds and many of these species fall in the category of highly prized and rare. A significant section of these species of birds indigenous and others indulge in migrating to and from Spain on season basis.

Bird watching enthusiasts particularly love to watch Griffin vultures, Golden Eagle and Egyptian vultures in Spain. There are more then 400 Black vultures that may interest bird watching fans. In fact, Black vulture in considered the biggest bird of prey indigenous to Europe. Those who are really interested in finding a spot one can exclusively watch a number of Black vultures are advised to visit Andalucia’s national Park situated in southern Spain or go to Sierra Palada.

If it is a specific variety of bird that you want to watch in Spain then it is important that you plan your vacation as well in advance. This is because many species of birds are migratory and can be seen in Spain only for specific period of time. One such example is White Stork which is a migratory bird which is very rarely seen in rest of the Europe but can be easily found in Spain. White Stork migrates from somewhere in Africa to Spain and can be seen between the month of January and February. Most of the time Bird watchers get to see these birds easily as they generally make their nests in cities and their nests are quite easy to locate.

Another indigenous species of migratory bird is Flamingo that arrives in thousands of numbers in Spain during the summer and spring season. Spain also provides an ample opportunity to watch some wet land birds such as cranes and ducks. Best ways to watch wetland birds are the costal wetland areas and Ebro Delta. National Park of Donana also has a large number of wetland Bird species.
Golden oriole is another species that can be exclusively found in Andalucía’s orchards and wood lands. Golden oriole can be particularly seen during the summer season and is known for their dazzling bright and yellow body. The black, orange and white hoopoe is another striking species that can be seen in golf courses and opened wood lands.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently sounded a global health alarm in response to a new threat that has been emerging in several regions, particularly Asia. This threat is the avian influenza, more commonly known as bird flu, which is an infectious diseases that affects only birds…until recently.

What exactly is bird flu?

Bird flu is an infectious disease caused by several subtypes of the Influenza A virus, which is known to affect birds, particularly migratory birds, ducks and chickens. Bird flu is also reportedly known to affect pigs and ducks although these animals only serve as carriers and are not known to exhibit symptoms of the disease. Migratory birds, in general, are equipped to handle the virus. They do not get sick but they have the ability to contaminate other birds in areas they migrate to. This is crucial factor in the spread of disease because migratory birds travel great distances, often from one country to another.

When did bird flu start?

Bird flu is not a new disease. First discovered in Italy in 1878, it was initially called “fowl plague” because it largely affected chicken livestock. However, it was only in 1955 that the Influenza A virus is the cause of bird flu. Since then, several subtypes of the Influenza A virus has been discovered in about a hundred bird species.

According to research, wild waterfowls, particularly ducks, are the most common carriers of the disease. The ducks, however, do not get sick from it. It was discovered that gulls, waterfowls and shorebirds are natural “reservoirs” of the bird flu virus. These animals appear to have developed antibodies to fight against the virus. Other bird species, however, have not developed this immunity to the virus.

Symptoms of bird flu

Birds with mild forms of avian influenza can exhibit ruffled feathers and poor egg production. Birds with advanced or extreme forms of the disease may show signs of excessive shedding, respiratory infections and a swollen head. When the disease worsens, death usually comes within 48 hours. This is because bird flu not only affects the respiratory systems of birds but also other tissues and organs, causing major hemorrhaging.

History of bird flu outbreaks

In the 1980s, bird flu outbreaks in chickens and birds occurred in Scotland, England, Canada, Germany, United States, Australia and Ireland. Again in the 1990s the same countries, with the exception of Germany and Scotland, had outbreaks. This time, Italy, Pakistan, Hong Kong, the Netherlands and Chile joined them. However, these outbreaks were small-scale; and highly pathogenic outbreaks are rare.

Then in 1997, a major outbreak of bird flu occurred in Hong Kong, which left 18 people infected and six people killed. In response to the outbreak, the Hong Kong government killed Hong Kong’s entire poultry population, which was estimated at 1.5 million. Many believe that this rapid response to the bird flu outbreak was the best solution and helped avert it from becoming a pandemic.

To determine if a bird flu virus is highly pathogenic, eight chickens between four and eight weeks old are inoculated with the infectious virus. If 75 percent of the samples (six chickens) die within eight days, the virus is considered to be very pathogenic. In addition, a highly pathogenic virus will show a distinctive sequence of amino acids located at the cleavage site, the HA part of the chain.

Bird hunting has become a very popular hunting pastime. While some hunters like the element of hunting over water for birds such as ducks and geese, many more prefer what is know as upland bird hunting. The upland birds are those such as pheasant, grouse, quail, and partridge that live exclusively on land. This can be much easier for many hunters in a few different ways.

For the hunter who prefers to hunt waterfowl, his biggest investment, other than perhaps his dog, is buying a boat. While some hunters walk the peripheries of ponds or flooded areas, the best way to bag a trophy is heading to the bird’s territory; the water. While many hunters prefer using a boat and enjoy being on the water, many more do not. Especially for the newcomer who isn’t sure what he prefers yet, buying a boat right out of the gate can be an expensive investment he may not even use. The upland bird, however, stays exclusively on the land hiding in underbrush and thickets in the forest or prairie. The hunter needs to scare the bird from its hiding place so he can get a shot at it.

Another element of the waterfowl hunt is the dog. When hunting from a boat and downing birds, your trophy will always fall into the water, so using a bird dog is almost necessary to retrieve it. However, the upland bird hunter can get away without the use of a dog. A well-trained dog can, however, add a priceless element to any hunt by tracking down the bird for you. The upland bird dog is trained for a great sense of smell and keen eyesight so not only can he see where your bird fell, but will be able to track it if it’s only wounded. Another great asset will be the dog’s ability to flush the bird out of it’s hiding place. He’ll be able to detect any movement and alert the hunter to a bird’s presence.

If keeping dry while hunting sounds like something for you, then upland bird hunting is the perfect choice. Other than a weapon and hunting apparel, a hunter has little investment to make into his sport, and it offers just as much of a challenge as waterfowl. Many of the popular states for upland hunting are in the northern regions such as South Dakota, and it is also popular in the United Kingdom.
