Ducks At A Distance

Duck and chicken help…?? ( 20 characters)?

Some duck and chicken questions…….?

Okay, so, I’m going to be getting some ducklings in about three weeks and I am starting to make housing plans.

I was wondering, can I household two ducks and two chickens in the the same pen? Why or why not?

Also, if I get two ducks and raise them from hatchlings, will they subdue be tame and friendly to me, or will they only like eachother?

How much room do 2 ducks and 2 chickens ( together, if possible) need for housing? ~ How many square feet? (is 11′ by 15′ excellent enough?)

Is hog fencing a excellent fencing to use for the pen? ( will it be raccoon proof that way?

How many eggs do two average/normal hens lay a day? ~ If they are healthy.

Thank You Very Much! Many Blessings! :)

Ducks and chickens need different types of housing, so keeping them together is not a fantastic thought. Ducks are 10x messier than chickens. Chickens roost (perch) but most ducks are ground nesters. Here is a fantastic list of reasons not to get ducks:

But if you do, it also provides information on the issues to consider first. Many, many, many public get ducks then realize they are in over their heads, and need to place them in new homes. Consider rescuing ducks rather than raising your own. Here is a list of ducks needing homes:

And here’s a predator-proof duck pen option (would work better if it were taller):

Hardware cloth (wire) on all sides, top & bottom is best. If you use a chain-link dog-kennel option instead, wrap hardware cloth around the bottom two feet so raccoons can’t reach in and get the ducks. A top net/barrier is crucial.

I used to have a duck. When I picked it out the store had the ducks and chicks penned together so I would say yes you can keep them together. I only had one duck and she was exceptionally attached to me. If I took her out of her pen she would stay right with me and I could do chores like gardening or washing the car out front where there is no fence and she would stay right with me. If you get two they become more attached to each other, but if they’re childish enough and you spend a lot of time with them I would reckon they may become attached to you. I had mine in a 15′ by 15′ pen with a small kiddy pool. I had to change the water in the kiddy pool once a week and scrub the total thing out. Plus she laid eggs at least one a day that I had to clean up. It is a lot of work. Plus they can live for a pretty long time.

If you raise the ducks and chicks together they will be like family, you shouldnt have any problems with them. you have to be careful with chickens because if you get two roosters you will start to have problems. i just got rid of my roosters because they became very aggressive, try to get females. I hope this helped!!! Excellent Luck!

You can household ducks and chickens together, they both will get along with each other. But if you do plot to household them both together you will have to make some modifications such as, making nest boxes low enough for the ducks or add a ramp so they can get in and out, and a water trough huge enough so they can at least stick their head and neck in.

If they were to be raised from hatchlings, they will most likely recognize that you are the one that feeds them. It would be more effective if you handle them a lot while they are childish.

11 by 15 is decent but of course, the larger the better.

Hog fencing is excellent since you can get different sizes, but chicken wire would be best since the holes made by the wire would be much smaller making sure nothing gets in or out. But if you do plot on making a pen, you are going to have to seal off the top so that raccoons, cats, foxes, and hawks don’t get in.

A hen will usually lay at least one egg every 23-25 hours.

I’m worried I can’t answer the one about how much room they will need except I saw exactly where they would be. But, I can answer your other questions for you.

    * Yes. Housing two chickens and two ducks in the same pen should be fine. But, they force pick on each other for a few days since they’re not used to it.

    * If you raise the ducks from hatchlings they will be tame and friendly, as long as you raise them with like and treat them properly.

    * The average hen lays one egg a day, but there are also some catches. If you have a childish chicken that is just starting to lay they force lay one every other day, or every two days until their body gets regulated. If you have a breed of chicken that lays really excellent eggs, they MIGHT lay two eggs a day. Also, some beginning egg layers RARELY, but sometimes lay huge eggs. These eggs are referred to as “Monster Eggs” and sometimes contain double yolk.

    Hope this helps!
